I think that is a great bike for a first bike. It looks like you thought through the setup and made a lot of excellent choices. Your bike cost less, weighs less, will be easier to maintain and will get better gas milage than my Ninjamatic by far.
As long as you exercise common sense, there is no reason why a sport bike should not be your first bike. But don't let me ever see you standing over that bike in shorts again.
A few years ago, while visiting University Honda in Seattle, I noticed a large dressing on the inside of the calf of a mechanic I knew, who worked there. I asked what had happened. It turned out that he was rudely awakened to how hot some parts of a motorcycle get under normal riding conditions when he took a bike out for a test drive wearing shorts.
Keep in mind that "Road Rash" is medically the equivalent of a third degree burn. I have been lifted from the pavement and taken to a hospital by an ambulance three times in the past 22 years of riding. Each time, I was glad I was "fully armored up".
There are two classes of riders, those who have had an accident and those who will have an accident.
